The dun mustang mare limped away from her home. Her front left leg not usable as it seemed to flop around. It was painfull for she could still feel everything in her leg. She made her way to the top of the hill and looked down upon a ranch. She had chosen this one kinda randomly for she had passed others that didn't look very welcomeing. She let out a sigh and then made her way down the hill. People were walking horses around until they noticed her and they put the horses away and then stopped and looked at her. She stopped at the bottom of the hill as the kids stopped playing to come and see. Montana thought of Thunder and Caliana as she stood there waiting to see what they would do. She missed her young filly and her stallion but this had to be done. She lowered her head and one of the women standing there began to approch. Men then began to approch and Montana stood with her head down as a small girl came up and touched Montana on her forehead. It shocked the mare and she wanted to pull back but her ears flicked and she moved her head to the side. They moved her leg around and they spoke to one another. They didn't sound very promising and then the women noticed that Montana had milk and they all began looking around wondering where her foal was.
The humans put a rope around Montana's neck and gentle asked for Montana to move and the mare hesitantly hobbled forward. The vet came out and looked at her leg and they seemed to go over the options of what to do before the doctor pointed and the man pulled on Montana in that direction. She was pulled into a room and then something poked into her skin. She jumped as it had been a needle and the humans put her into a sling. The shot had relaxed the mare, unable to really move or do anything but just stand and then the sling kept her up and unable to go anywhere. The doctor then moved Montana's leg back into place with a few pops here and there and then put it into a cast. He then gave Montana another shot and they took her out of the sling and within thirty minutes the mare was herself again and able to move around and walk on her leg again. They led her out of the room and through the barn to a paddock where they walked her in and took the lead rope off and then ran out and shut the gait. Montana began moving slowely and lowered her head to sniff what was on her leg, it prevented her from bending her leg and she pinned her ears down at it as she still couldn't manuver very well. The paddock was connected to a stall and she sniffed and snorted as she stuck her head in and then moved back out.

Three days went by. The humans fed her hay and oats with some antibiotics mixed in the oats for her leg. On the third day a person came out and roped Montana. She reared up and pulled back tossing her head and squealing. She snorted as she finally began to calm down and she faced the human with her head raised and her ears pinned against her skull. A few men helped the one by throwing more ropes around her neck and finally pulling her down off her feet and they piled on top of her. She struggled but soon the vet came in and stuck a needle into her neck once again, making her body relax no matter how hard she tried. The vet took off the cast and gave it a good look and rotated it around a little. He seemed satisfied and then another poke in the neck. The men then took there ropes off and they all left the pen and Montana began to move again. Within about thirty minutes Montana was up and walking, her leg could move again and she trotted around the small pen. She tossed her dial happily and gave out a buck.
The humans seemed pleased and they had big grins on their faces. Montana was happy to walk again but little did she know that the humans were planning to keep her. She had a build much like that of the quarter horses and they could always use another horse for their ranch.

Montana was let out into a large pasture where she could really stretch her legs out and she could run around. She was happy to run again and the humans seemed pleased as well. Night came by quickly and Montana stood at the fence neighing. She wanted to see her foal and stallion again. She missed them dearly and she whinnied, hoping a human would come out. Something told her though the humans were not planning to let her go. They had taken an interest in her and she wanted out now.
As the grown ups talked inside the little girl listened and starred out the window. She had heard from her mother that the mare had milk but the men said that the foal was probably dead. The girl hoped that it wasn't though and could only imagine if her own mother was taken from her. The little girl walked out the door while they talked about what to do and walked down to the fence where the mare seemed to prick up at the site of her. Montana paced along the fence line back and forth. The little girl stood back and watched and then walked up and stood at the fence. She held out her hand and said, Easy girl
Montana stopped and snorted but lowered her head to the girl and walked over. She moved slowely but got to the girl and snorted blowing air at the girl and she giggled. Montana pricked her ears forward and whinnied and tossed her head. The girl then went to the gait and unlatched it. She then opened it and stood back. Montana watched the girl move out of the way and then she bolted out the gait and away from the house and barn and up the hill. She let out a buck and then at the top of the hill she stopped and looked down at the girl. She looked for a moment and then bolted away back towards home.
